Top Ten Tuesday: Most Intimidating Books

July 2, 2013 by Sana

To me, even the word ‘intimidate’ itself is intimidating so there ought to be books that are intimidating as well, right? If I start browsing books thoroughly, I’ll soon be pretty busy compiling a very long list. Thus, the following list is pretty much top-of-the-head random. And I really, really want to read these. Ugh, the complications in life!

I went ahead and bought Delirium and Pandemonium back in December but I’ve only gotten so far as to stare at the series from time to time. Now I wait for the day I will actually dare to read it. Sigh.
The whole Adam-Warner thing and then the it’s-garbage-slash-I-lurrrv-it reviews have gotten me so confused that I had to distance myself from the Shatter Me series for a while.
The whole reason of wanting to read Hush, Hush is the curiosity which is boiling over the pan even right now. But then I hardly ever like angels in YA fiction so it ends up intimidating me instead.
Shiver. Maggie Stiefvater. Intimidating and intimidating. ‘Nuff said.

Heist Society series is so overly hyped that while I’m sure I’ll like it I just don’t want the option of not liking it.  So I wait for it to go away.
I know I’ll read Just One Day before I read If I Stay and that’s mainly because of the intimidating factor. So there.
I try to not read genuinely fun books like Anna and the French Kiss because once I read it, the anticipation will be over. (You can go ahead and call me crazy now).

This Barney Stinson inspired category for intimidating books is perfect. The Book Thief is YA and it intimidates just like The Perks of Being a Wallflower did. There’s history involved.
The Iron King is so very popular and Julie Kagawa is so famous in the publishing world that I just can’t help feeling intimidated. So just… okay?
Vampire Academy is here because of well, vampires. I’ve become wary of any vampire characters not belonging to The Vampire Diaries or the Angel Creek series.

Top Ten Tuesday: Words That Instantly Make Me Pick Up a Book

April 30, 2013 by Sana

A word list is only second to a book list and if I could I’d have totally made a much, much longer one. But no bonuses because a ten is a ten and self-control is err, a good thing?

I’m an adventure-aholic and I cannot lie. Okay so I cannot for the life of me watch horror movies or have enough courage to go for a rollercoaster ride. Not yet anyway. But adventure for me is something I get an adrenaline rush from and I’d never say no to it if it stares at me in my face. So books with adventures in them? Yes, please.

Dangerous secrets undones you and there is nothing more saucy than secrets. Kind of reminds me of some historical era or some sci-fi awesomeness. Secrets are like essential in books anyway. Think The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and Pushing the Limits.
Be it emotional or physical, survival books always teach you something. And the good thing is that it comes in the shapes of dystopia, sci-fi, contemporary, paranormal and fantasy. I mean all of Harry Potter was essentially about survival and look how popular it is!
When you’re on the run, there’s bound to be action and a lot of moments that are just breathtaking. You just never have to let go or you die. This fascinates me.
A lot of things can happen at parties and then there’s music in them. There’s just something so mystically attractive about hundreds of bodies moving to the beat of the music. Remember The DUFF? City of Bones? From What I Remember…? The list is endless.

Okay, I live for such books. Undeniable attraction is way better than boring companionship or that’s just how I like my books.
I don’t even need to read another word of the blurb if I come across this. Road trips are just so freakin’ awesome! Radio on, speakers blaring music, windows down and everything illuminated by the sun.
I’m a big fan of what if, I think of what ifs all day long and reading about characters going through what ifs is just great and so thought-provoking. Who said books are useless?

Remember crazy attraction? This is another variation which brings on crazy banter and there’s usually a bad boy involved. I find these books to be irresistible. Onyx? Perfect Chemistry? Classic.
Eiffel Tower is the best thing to ever happen and the ambience of Paris is just about perfect. The best romance happens there and in Amsterdam (The Fault In Our Stars, guys!).

Top Ten Tuesday: Spring To-Read List

March 12, 2013 by Sana

I’m really not good at organizing what I will be reading next unless it’s for a blog tour. I like to read books that piques my interest. That being said, if I motivated myself enough to become organized I’ll be reading the following in the spring of 2013:

i. The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston
Multiple fake identities fascinate me and then there’s a smart and adorable farm boy. I’m such a thrill-seeker. Sigh.

ii. The Rules by Stacey Kade

Another book in which the main character is hiding her true identity but this one is science fiction and there’s a police chief’s son involved. The adventurer in me squeals again.

iii. Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger

A girl guardian who walks on wind and saves the boy from a tornado. I’m in awe already.

iv. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer blew my mind and since I just read it last month, I figured I’d wait for some time before reading the sequel. I’d wait till October but I don’t think I have it in me. I just hope the book doesn’t destroy me completely.

v. Uprising by Jessica Therrien
I’m very excited to read Uprising and seeing as I had to wait a year to get around to reading the sequel, it’ll be totally worth the wait.

vi. Insurgent by Veonica Roth

I finished Divergent today and because I have yet to get my wits together about the awesomeness that is Veronica Roth’s creation, I want to savor the Divergent experience.

vii. The Loop by Shandy Lawson

“Ben and Maggie have met, fallen in love, and died together countless times.”
Sometimes the first line of the synopsis pulls you in and screams at you to read the book. This is definitely one of those books.

viii. Nantucket Blue by Leila Howland

The main characters seems to have been thrown in an unknown complicated environment when plans go awry. I want to know how she deals with it. I want to read this book.

ix. The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff
The Flame in the Mist seems to have everything I like to read from dark adventures to magic to villains. I’m so ready to read this book!

x. Nobody But Us by Kristin Halbrook
I like to read books about broken people who find their other half and together they mend each other. This book sounds like such a book so give it to me now.

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Characters In Road Trip Genre

February 19, 2013 by Sana

Despite my evergreen love for the road trip genre, I haven’t read that many books from it (this a great Goodreads list to get started). However, road trip books are so good that it’s pretty easy to fall in love with more than one character. So here’s my list:

Caleb and Maggie from Return to Paradise by Simone Elkeles

Take two characters who have more than a rocky history together and put them together in a single bus on a summer trip. It only spells disaster and emotionally drained. I liked Caleb because of his intimidating yet gentle and reserved nature. Whereas despite Maggie having a lot to deal with, she is willing to forgive Caleb. I found this to be very intriguing and they get to open up to each other which gives a deeper meaning to their actions.

Dylan from Take Me There by Carolee Dean

I connected with Dylan; his restlessness, his failed attempts at trying to understand himself, his fate, his redemption. You know it in your heart that he is utterly genuine but trouble is only at arm’s length when it comes to him. It is so gut-wrenching to see him trying so hard to succumb to his fate and fighting it at the same time. It undoes you and spectacularly so.

Jordan and Courtney from Two-Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Two-Way Street is a fun book. It has two characters who are broken up but unable to escape the circumstances of their break up. They still have a trip to college to survive ’cause apparently you can’t break up and not have it come bite you in the ass the next day.

So it is hard not to love Jordan who is helplessly in love but his hands are tied and Courtney who is seething with jealousy over Jordan’s made up girlfriend. The jibes, jealousy and the hilarity of the two characters easily made them one of my favorites.

Colin and Hassan from An Abundance of Katherines from John Green

These two are a perfect pair unto each other. They can honestly live together happily ever after. Colin is awkward, socially inept but crazy smart and he knows facts! I totally related to him on that level. I love knowing and telling facts and statistics (not like Sheldon’s does) so it was awesome to see Colin do that.

And Hassan is comfortable in his skin which is what makes him so likable in my book. Also, it was great to read about a Muslim character and from John Green’s point of view. I just didn’t like the way Hassan kept calling Colin kafir; that is so not acceptable.

Kylie, Max and Will from From What I Remember… by Stacy Kramer and Valerie Thomas

I adore this book so it’s no wonder that out of the four main characters, three are my favorite. Kylie is a favorite ’cause she has that not-concerned-with-others look about her and she is damn smart! She likes to keep with herself or the people she is comfortable with which is so me.

Max was such an asshole at first but then I got to know him and the guy had depth he wasn’t showing! He almost did a complete one-eighty as the story progressed. I said almost because he gets confused in between and I wanted to shake him out of it. Generally, he is a milder Noah Hutchkins and hot.

Will is the coolest character ever (second to only Wesley Rush from The DUFF). He likes to party and could act like the laziest person ever when everyone else is panicking. I wouldn’t have minded reading the whole book from his point of view or even reading one of him only. The best gay character as yet (along with Cinna from The Hunger Games).

Top Ten Tuesday: Most Frustrating Characters Ever

January 29, 2013 by Sana

Frustrating, dissatisfying and what not, some characters could be frustratingly good others just plain frustrating. My list is leaning towards the later. I bet Bella is on your list.

i. Lily – Can I just say argh one more time?
Lily is frustrating from the get-go, I mean she used the word canoodling. It’s like this with Lily: if she catches her boyfriend with a i-hate-that-do-gooder-girl-from-high-school, she presumes that her boyfriend needs her. And then she has the nerve to be sarcastic which is really just her being insulting in From What I Remember…
ii. Bishop – Insta-love-me-baby.
I liked Bishop a lot in the prologue when he’s all defiant and what not. But come the actual start of the book, he just seems almost… bored. Kraven garnered more attention from me than Bishop and he isn’t even the main character in Dark Kiss.
iii. Scarlett – “And, you, Miss, are no lady.”
I love Gone With the Wind and I ended up liking Scarlett. But at first she was definitely the meanest, heartless b*tch. I was overjoyed when Rhett finally saw right through her and saw through he did. And then began the un-frustration part but that is a story for another day.
iv. Veronique – Don’t you just hate that name?
It’s pretty normal to hate the girl who dates your ex but Veronique takes it to another level. She is a total psycho and her brother, Carter is beyond evil. He makes Chuck Bass look like a puppy, okay not really but you get my point. But it was really Veronique who got to me like a bad case of a cold in Kiss and Make Up.
v. Cameron MacDonald – Can anyone get any more frustrating than him?
That guy from Mercy is blind! While his wife life revolves around him, Cam is as selfish, controlling and self-centered as they come. I mean you’re having an affair with your wife’s Flower Shop assistant for God’s sake!
vi. Bella – Clumsy, much? Oh…right.
There is nothing more disappointing than a girl fixated on a perfect vampire who has nothing better to do with his time than graduate high school over and over. She is made up to be this girl who never really felt at home being human. What the hell? And oh, Edward basically described himself best here in The Twilight Saga: “What a sick, masochistic lion.” You betcha.
vii. Brianna – Just look at me already!
I found Brianna from Silver to be shallow and needy. I get that, being a teenager, it hurts when boy look past you but then your bracelet comes off and suddenly you’re this gorgeous woman. There is not much else to her.
viii. Kate – Will you stop about the vibe?
Did You Get the Vibe? is a pretty unknown book and rightly so. Kate pretty much sleeps with anyone provided she gets the vibe from them. It’s just all sad, really.
ix. Tobey – It’s really just a matter of time.
Tobey wants Sara but when he can’t, he chooses to spend his days observing Sara and trying to get her to fall for him. He just won’t take no for an answer or get a clue. Buut then the book is titled When It Happens.
x. Zoe – Dumbed down.

Zoe from Glitch frustrated me because she got attracted to Max who is really a class one jerk. It’s not apparent at first to Zoe but when even it does, Zoe forgives him over and over. God.
